A clearance fit offers easier installation and removal but possible shaft damage during operation, while interference fits offer a more rugged connection but is more difficult to install and remove.AGMA offers standard dimensions for both types of fit. In general, an interference fit is recommended for shafts 5-1/2" and larger; for smaller shafts, clearance fits are used based on user preference, but interference fits are recommended for rough applications and reverse loading.
